DJ Kay Slay

DJ Kay Slay isn’t just known for his work in the music industry, he’s also known for his magazine, Straight Stuntin Magazine. Straight Stuntin Magazine features sexy ladies with curves. These ladies aren’t your typical tall, skinny broads from most magazines. These honies are thick, proving that models come in all forms. And this was Kay Slay’s ultimate goal. He wanted to create a magazine that featured women who were having difficulty getting published because they had body. Approximately 5.5 years ago when he started the magazine, his goal was to change this. From what we see, he has changed it, since Blackmen’s Mag, King Mag and other magazines that were popular before his magazine came out changed up their style as well. While other publications were turning down women of color who were short and voluptuous, he was welcoming them and showcasing their talents. His magazine is high-quality. He features videos on his website, and the magazine discusses topics like music and music celebs, too. Recently, he dropped another magazine called Originators. Throughout his time working on Straight Stuntin Magazine, he worked with models such as Rosa Acosta and Cat Washington A.K.A Ms. Cat. He enjoyed working with both of these women because they were always on time, didn’t complain, didn’t act “Hollywood” and were down to earth. Keep that in mind ladies who want to work for DJ Kay Slay! He also stated that “Destiny Moore is on the road to greatness.” He didn’t comment about which model was the worst to work with, and we understand. We don’t want to see any divas out there getting upset with him, but we’re still a little curious.

You may know Kay Slay by his nickname, the Drama King. We all know what a drama queen is, but in this instance, it doesn’t mean the same thing. His nickname stemmed from him not being bias toward battle records. He wasn’t concerned if a person was broke or if they were filthy rich. The artists who were doing it right were played, regardless of their statuses. Speaking of drama, this New York City DJ spoke to us about his take on the beef in the game today. He feels that a majority of it is petty. Back in the day, someone would call a person out on the mic. Today, it’s completely different. He’s wondering why people even try to make it out of the streets through the rap game if they’re just going to do something to send them to prison.

DJ Kay Slay got away from the negative, and now he’s releasing yet another album. His Rhyme or Die album is set to be released soon and will feature big hip hop talents like Kendrick Lamar, Rick Ross, Raekwon, Bun-B, Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Joell Ortiz, Mac Miller, Fabulous and Lloyd Banks, plus some others. In fact, Papoose made an appearance on this album, and it’s not the first time he’s worked with Kay Slay. Papoose was once one of those rappers waiting outside Hot 97 – like many other of the up and coming rappers at the time – to give this DJ his record. DJ Kay Slay is a fan of lyricists, and he liked what he heard. Papoose might have his own label Honor B4 Money, and he may be flying down to Jamaica to shoot videos, but him and DJ Kay Slay are still tight. They’re like family and still support one another.

This DJ has many years to come in the business, especially since he doesn’t plan on retiring. He informed us that DJing is part of hip hop, hip hop is culture and culture is a way of life; thus, he’s not going to get out of the industry. He did this when he wasn’t getting paid, and he’s going to continue to do it until he “goes back to the essence” as he refers to it. The future of DJing for him is to bring back real hip hip, when talent overrode gimmicks. DJ Kay Slay states that he’s worked with almost everyone he respects in the game, so he doesn’t have anyone in particular he wants to work with; however, he would have loved to have had an opportunity to work with 2Pac – and we’re sure he’s not the only member of the hip hop community who wants this. His plans to stay active as a DJ brings about the problems of staying relevant, and he says that he accomplishes this by “not riding other niggas waves and staying in my own lane.” He represents the up and coming artists because he knows that two out of 10 of them will be the next future stars, and he will have contributed to that.

As a person, DJ Kay Slay judges people based on their actions and ways toward him. He doesn’t care about what everyone says about a person. He told us that if someone is real to him, that’s all that matters. He believes that everyone has a past and deserves a second chance. We also discovered that he has a sense of humor. He gave prospective DJs and magazine publishers advice, and he said that you should avoid kissing ass unless it’s your woman’s. On a serious note, he informed us that the up and coming should find their niche and run with it.

We have seen Momma Jones be the matriarch in her family’s life with Love and Hip Hop and Chrissy and Mr. Jones. She may come off as being a little too much or psycho but here at Exit 21 Magazine we wanted to see the other side of Momma Jones. We wanted to dig deep to show a side of her no one has done before, Momma Jones the college graduate, author, entrepreneur, business woman and grandmother.
Nancy “Momma” Jones attended college at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Growing up she always wanted to be part of the fashion world. She talked about making clothes for her dolls and always made sure her children had good style. In fact, her son Jim Jones caught the fashion bug from her. As Momma Jones puts it he has a “shoe addiction.”

She has dived head first in the perfume business with her very own scent called PumKash. The perfume caters to a sensual woman with a rough edge who likes a smooth smell. The name for her perfume came about one night she was drinking with a friend and was clowning with names. We have seen celebrities for year’s cash in on the fragrance game and we here at Exit 21 got an up close smell of the fragrance and give it two thumbs up. She honestly feels like out of all her business ventures the perfume will hit it big because all women love perfume. Her business ideas just keep coming and won’t stop Momma Jones also working hard with her clothing line and condom line both under Psycochotic. Yes, I said condoms. Momma put her motherly touch on the condoms slogan with “Mama Says Never Leave Home Without it.” We wonder how Jim feels about his momma having her own condom line, awkward. Nevertheless, the woman is serious about making money and she hasn’t stopped with just fashion and condoms.

You can add lip gloss, weave, a book and even vodka to her business empire. For the weave, all the hair is 100 percent real human hair. We expected nothing less. With the book, Mama Jones Love and Romance, she explains the concept as Steve Harvey was looking out for the women; she is looking out for the men. Tells men how to cheat, which is not going to please a lot of women when they read this.

“They are bad in cheating and this bitch just gave up all my shit,” she says. “I’m sure women across America will be trying their hardest to keep this book out of their man’s hands.”

Sticking on the topic of love, Momma Jones has always been outspoken about relationships, especially Jim’s. When asked about hers she said she is very happy despite the fact that she and her husband are separated right now. In her own words, “He was a really good husband but sometimes things happen.” The two remain friends and have handled the separation like adults. She tells us that she and her current boyfriend are doing great and are in love.

When she’s not busy with business, she attends venues, spends a little time with the grand and great grandchildren and gets back to the normal life. No matter how busy she is, everyone in the Jones house knows to make time for Sunday dinner. She names her greatest achievement in life is seeing her daughter about to graduate from college in May. It’s a bittersweet moment for her because she is the baby out of five children.
“Without them I would be lost,” she said when talking about her family.

Exit 21 Magazine wish nothing but the best for Momma Jones and all her business ventures. We will keep readers updated on the clothing line, condoms, lip gloss, vodka, book and anything else she comes up with in the future.

Unions are formed to protect and promote. When speaking in terms of skills, most unions are comprised of a number of experienced individuals focused on promoting the perfection of their craft with a performance rate that creates a high demand in a particular industry. When it comes to Hip-Hop and the music industry, such protection is limited. And as for promotion… that depends on your skills! Like all industries, the sale of their products’ promotion relies heavily upon their advertisement department. There’s no better way to advertise new music than to hear it on the radio or in the club. Well, it’s no secret that NYC has some of the hottest nightclubs and parties in the world! What makes these parties and nightclubs rock hard are the Super DJ’s spinning on the ones and twos. In case you are unaware, New York maintains an exclusive disc jockey democracy- an elite group known as Da Union. Da Union was started as a collaborative effort between Brooklyn’s own DJ Snatch 1, internationally acclaimed DJ Self and “Da Bronx Bomber”- DJ Will. Together they have monopolized the club circuit and elected other noteworthy DJs to participate in ensuring that we continue to have a reliable and most pleasurable musical experience.

DA Union
Established 2007, NYC
Instagram/Twitter @DaUnionDJs

THE FOUNDERS
Undeniably masters of their craft, DJ Self, DJ Snatch 1 and DJ Will were destined to become more than the average DJ. After setting themselves apart from the typical radio wave dis jockey who plays the top 20 songs during their predictable segment. These 3 men concocted a plan to take over while aiming high for goals that would assist in their pursuit of legendary status. Not only does Da Union conquer the radio waves, they have dominated the club circuit only to expand further in the flourishing music industry. Accomplishments like these don’t happen overnight. Five years ago, these DJs sat down to reach the epitome of the careers. But before they became Da Union and could actually enjoy what it’s like to be on top, they’ve done their share in experiencing the bottom.

DJ Self has been on the scene rocking the club circuit since 1996. Hailing from Fort Greene-Brooklyn, DJ Self’s swag approach to DJing is innate. When he’s on stage mixing tracks from hip hop to R&B, you can recognize the Brooklyn swag that he attributes to the legendary Hip Hop store: “Beatstreet.” DJ Self has showcased his eminent skills up and down the East Coast. But he never stopped there. As a previous member of the DJ group X Factor, DJ Self’s desire to spread his wings and chose a route alternative to the group. With no love lost, he parted from the group in hopes to handle his growth both musically and business wise. His drive was communicated through his music allowing for him to travel internationally from London to Germany and ultimately Tokyo. Self’s growing notoriety welcomed a celebrity client list and the demand needed to keep him in the game. What made DJ Self successful and how would he advise those who seek to follow in his footsteps? “I always tell upcoming DJs and upcoming artistsThe 5 P’s. Proper preparation prevents poor performance! So, if you prepare yourself for the things you’re doing – the outcome will be great!” DJ Self is prepared and he maintains the same work ethic as when he entered the scene. Sticking to his plan and ever progressing, there’s no slowing him down. Hustling is an understatement! Between murdering the clubs on the weekends and weekday radio syndications with Power 105.1 and Shade 45, one would think DJ Self had his plate full. Not DJ Self! Just prior to our interview, DJ Self had did a party with 2 Chainz in Philadelpia. With more anticipated parties, DJ Self will be debuting his latest upcoming project – a clothing line called Gwinin. You can find his latest fashion at www.shopgwinin.com and www.gwinin.tv. Other future projects include a mixtape called Expanding My Business. The first single is “Word to My Mother” which features Future, Meek Mill and Jim Jones. Partying with Hip Hop’s elite is an everyday experience for DJ Self. The artist at the top of his to-work-with list is the incomparable Eminem. While DJ Self is currently working on Shade 45 (a SiriusXM uncut Hip Hop radio channel created by Eminem and other Aftermath companions), he had never worked with him on a musical level. So, while we wait in the cut for that epic collaboration, listen to DJ Self on Power 105.1FM from 10 pm – 2 am. You can find him on Instagram and Twitter @DJSelf and onFacebook.com/DJSelf.

Call him the General!!! As a General, Mastermind and Founding Member of Da Union, DJ Snatch 1 continues to hold down the group as they move forward. A word of advice from DJ Snatch 1, “Stay true to yourself, stay true to your game and maintain loyalty. The last thing you want people to think is that you are not loyal… You won’t last long in this business.” As far as Snatch 1’s concerned, Da Union was, is and will always be comprised of DJs, who strive to maintain longevity and conduct their business accordingly. Representing East New York, Brooklyn and exemplifying the grit of a true hustler in the business since 1995, DJ Snatch 1’s resume is quite lavish. Orchestrating the sounds for numerous corporate functions, movie and album release events and well over 3000 nightclub parties has given him access to the best clientele. Such exposure has also granted him the opportunity to, like many of his Union peers, do parties for many celebrities and socialites as one of NYC’s ‘Go-To’ DJs. Between the Clubs, DJing on 107.5 WBLS FM (NY, NJ, CT) and 3 internet radio shows: DTFRadio.com (New York), BeatminerzRadio.com (New York) and SwurvRadio.com (Las Vegas), Snatch 1 holds strong to his position as Union General and maintains a group of DJs, who continue to take the industry by storm. To find out more, follow DJ Snatch 1 on Twitter/ Instagram @DJSnatch1, as well as facebook.com/DJSnatchOne

Da Bronx Bomber, DJ Will, is the glue that holds Da Union together. With over 17 years of experience as one of the most sought after DJs, DJ Will is the king of celebrity hotspots in the most livest cities in the world ranging from New York, Europe, Las Vegas, Chicago, Asia, Miami and Los Angeles. Beyond the celebrity soirees he hosts, DJ Will has been honored to work with numerous artists both on stage and in the booth! Unlike many of these contemporary “laptop” DJ’s, DJ Will studied to become a master of his craft. “Just like with anything, you have to be the best at what you do. If you’re going to be a janitor, be the best janitor you can be. If you’re going to be a DJ, dedicate yourself to what this is. It’s not just going out to the club, meeting girls, sliding off and all that! We worked hard at this for years to get to the point we’re at right now to be on the radio and to be DJing parties for everybody. Definitely work hard at what you’re doing. Be a student of the game. Study! Don’t be a slouch or another computer DJ dude. Know your records, come out there, practice and work the crowd!” DJ Will’s solid work ethic has sustained his success and opened doors leading to top industry connections. With a laundry list of clients and future DJ Will can be heard on Power 105.1fm every Friday night between 12-2am. To find out more about DJ Will, follow him on Twitter @djwillbx & on Instagram @djwillnyc. For bookings email djwillnyc@aol.com.

UNION MEMBERS

Let’s give credit where credit is due, and give props to the only lady of the crew.
K-Starr is the “Queen of Brooklyn” when it comes to knowing how to control the crowd with MIC skills.

Known as a high profile entertainment industry event, The Core DJ’s Retreat is lauded for attracting the biggest names and brands. The almost decade-old retreat has been held in cities around the country, and draws DJs, artists, and tastemakers from around the country to network, build their brands, and promote their artists.

Now known as MIXSHOW LIVE, the semi-annual conference has evolved in major ways. As Atlanta continues to distinguish itself as a major hub for urban entertainment, MIXSHOW LIVE Atlanta may prove to be one of the biggest draws yet as T.I., joins Big Boi, Too Short, and DTP in hosting celebrity events.

With a mission to bring an unparalleled learning, networking and socializing experience for attendees, MIXSHOWLIVE Atlanta has recruited numerous industry heavy hitters to bring their expertise and brands to the conference. VP of Urban Programming for CBS Radio, Reggie Rouse (recently named on Billboard’s Urban Power 30 List), Deborah Atney (of Mizay Entertainment), DJ Greg Street, DJ Drama, and Source Magazine Publisher L. Londell McMillan, are among the confirmed panelists speaking this year.

“MIXSHOWLIVE is actually the evolution of the Core Retreat. MSL is centered on education and productive networking; we are offering more panels and workshops than previous Core Retreats. We’re also hosting social events (outside of just night clubs) to offer attendees and participants a real chance to network,” MSL Publicist, Cherrell Rene of Publicity Pieces shared exclusively with AllHipHop.com.

“While the Core Retreat has been to ATL in the past, this is the first MIXSHOW LIVE event in Atlanta,” Rene added. The Core DJ’s have partnered with event production company BornStarz AllStarz to bring a new vibe to this already popular event.

The four power-packed days of MIXSHOWLIVE Atlanta features an array of events with The W Hotel Buckhead as the headquarters and location of most of the panels and workshops, including panels on “Creating Your Image,” an “Industry Power Panel,” and the highly-anticipated, “Programmers POWER Panel,” featuring urban radio programmers from around the country. Major record labels Island/Def Jam and Interscope/Geffen/A&M are both hosting private listening suites. MIXSHOWLIVE Atlanta will also feature a pool party, celebrity bowling event, and a skating party.

While the motive behind the disses is presently unknown, Bynes began tweeting at Rihanna with insults she would later delete. In her tweets, Bynes said that Rihanna is “not pretty enough” and she claimed that is the reason Chris Brown assaulted her.

Look out for Chinx Drugz in the next issue

Word out in the streets Chinx Drugz is the hottest of the Coke Boyz behind French Montana. When we asked him when he will debut his solo album to the world he simply replied “soon.” It all started with the mixtapes that lead to shows and will soon lead him to higher levels in the game. After Montana’s album, he is going to debut with the No. 1 single in the streets, “I’m a Coke Boy.”

First things first for the Queens native is the Cocaine Riot Vol. 3 mixtape. It will be release within a month and is about 80 percent done. He’s also doing some work with French’s album Excuse My French, this is set to be release in March. Till then, readers go check out Drugz’ Cocaine Riot Vol. 1, 2 and Coke Boys 3 mixtapes.

First contact with French Montana and Coke Boys family was established by mutual friends. The late Stack Bundles and rapper Max B introduced Drugz and Montana together. Drugz’s go-to producers are Harry Fraud, Dolla Bill and Young Chop. According to him, Fraud is the hottest up and coming producer in the game right now.

“Your favorite artist f*ck with him,” Drugz said.

Dolla Bill did a lot of work for him and French. Young Chop, who is affiliated with Chief Keef from Chicago, has a single coming out from the Cocaine Riot Vol. 3 mixtape that he produces. Chop did a good portion of the tracks on French’s Mac and Cheese 3.

Thinking outside the hip hop box, Chinx would reach his arms out to work with Adele and M.I.A. in the future. Also open to working with anybody who is ready to work, get money and try to bring the love back to New York.

“I leave beef in the streets ,” Drugz said. “I don’t have any problems with any rapper.”

As a street leader, he knows the ups and downs in life. He wanted to let the young generation know that he understand and has been there but says to never give up on your dreams.

“If you a little boy or girl stuck in a situation I was y’all too,” Drugz said. “I just sat down and thought about what I wanted to do. Stay true to yourself and if you want something go after it. If you got a dream you have to chase that dream everyday with no time off.”

Follow Chinx Drugz on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
